How Do Beginners Start Digital Marketing?

I’m a big fan of Star Wars, and when I saw the trailer for The Force Awakens, it felt like the perfect trailer to me – even though we agreed not to talk about the ninth one. Digital marketing is like creating the perfect trailer for your audience.

It’s about grabbing attention and making people curious enough to engage with your brand, service, or product. But where do you even begin?

When I first started as a freelancer, digital marketing felt overwhelming. There were so many terms, strategies, and tools that I didn’t know where to focus. Here’s the thing: as a beginner, simplicity is your best friend. Start small and grow your knowledge step by step.

Here’s my piece of advice: Begin by learning the basics. What is digital marketing? It’s simply marketing your services or products online.

You’ll encounter tools for social media, email, SEO, and content creation. Start by exploring free resources. Here on my blog, I aim to provide many beginner-friendly guides and explain concepts in simple terms, so read some articles and start building your knowledge.

Think of it like learning to drive a car. You don’t master highway driving on day one. You start by understanding the basics—how to steer, brake, and accelerate.

The same goes for digital marketing. Practice the fundamentals first, and then experiment with more complex strategies.

Digital Marketing: 7 Essential Tips for Beginners

Here’s where the fun begins! I’ve put together seven essential tips that every beginner should know. Each one has been a game-changer in my own journey.

1. Know Your Audience

Imagine you’re hosting a party. Would you invite just anyone, or would you focus on inviting people who share similar interests?

For me, I would love to host a Star Wars party, but my friend who has never heard of it probably wouldn’t want to go. Digital marketing works the same way. Your audience is everything. Start by asking yourself questions like:

  • Who are my ideal customers?
  • What problems do they have?
  • Where do they spend their time online?

Actionable Step: Create a simple audience persona. Give them a name, age, job, and interests. This will help you connect with them more personally when crafting content or ads.

2. Learn to Use Social Media Effectively

Social media isn’t just for sharing memes or liking pictures of your friend’s dog – even though I love Ellie. It’s a powerhouse for digital marketing. But here’s the trick: don’t try to dominate every platform at once.

Think about it—would you enjoy watching a Star Wars marathon (movies and series) while also trying to follow every single DC movie? It’s overwhelming, right? Focus on one or two platforms where your audience is most active.

For example, if you’re targeting professionals, LinkedIn might be your best bet. Selling to younger audiences? TikTok and Instagram are goldmines.

Actionable Step: Choose one platform, learn its ins and outs, and start engaging consistently. Post valuable content, reply to comments, and observe what works.

3. Master SEO Basics

We’ll dive deeper into SEO in the next section, but let me just say this: SEO is the unsung hero of digital marketing. It’s like building a bridge that connects people to your website. Click here to see my full guide for beginners on SEO in 3 steps!

Actionable Step: Use free tools like Google Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest to find keywords your audience is searching for. Sprinkle them naturally into your blog posts or web pages.

4. Create High-Quality Content

If digital marketing is a movie, then content is the script. Without a strong storyline, even the most visually stunning movie flops – like Black Adam.

Good content informs, entertains, and solves problems for your audience. I focused on answering common questions people had about freelancing. That approach not only attracted readers but also positioned me as a helpful resource.

Actionable Step: Start small. Write a blog post, create a social media infographic, or shoot a short video. Focus on delivering value rather than perfection.

5. Build an Email List Early

You know those exclusive invites to premieres? An email list is like having your own VIP audience. Unlike social media, where algorithms can bury your content, emails go straight to your audience.

Start collecting emails early by offering something valuable—like a free guide, checklist, or discount. Actionable Step: Use tools like Mailchimp or ConvertKit to create email campaigns. Keep your emails short, friendly, and packed with value.

6. Track Your Results

Imagine running a race but never checking the finish line. How would you know if you’re improving? Tracking your digital marketing efforts is just as crucial.

Tools like Google Analytics or social media insights show you what’s working and what isn’t. When I first launched my website, I started tracking everything—traffic, click-through rates, and conversions. It helped me tweak my strategy and focus on what delivered results.

Actionable Step: Start with basic metrics like website visitors, engagement rates, and leads generated. Use these insights to improve your strategy.

7. Be Patient and Persistent

Here’s the truth: digital marketing isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. You’ll have days where you feel like giving up—trust me, I’ve been there.

Think about your favorite movies like Pulp Fiction or Jurassic Park. They weren’t created overnight. Success takes time, effort, and a willingness to adapt.

Actionable Step: Set realistic goals. Celebrate small wins, like your first 100 followers or email subscribers. These milestones will keep you motivated.

What is SEO in Digital Marketing?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, but don’t let the fancy name intimidate you. Think of SEO as a treasure map, with your website being the treasure.

The better your map (keywords, structure, and content), the more people will find you. Click here to discover the best SEO plugins for WordPress. Here are 3 plugins you should try!

SEO isn’t just about stuffing keywords; it’s about providing value and creating a great user experience. Here’s my piece of advice: Focus on three things:

  1. Keywords: Use tools like Ahrefs or Google Keyword Planner to find relevant terms.
  2. Content Quality: Make your posts engaging and easy to read.
  3. Technical SEO: Ensure your website loads quickly and is mobile-friendly.

Remember, SEO is a long game, but the rewards are worth it. When people start finding your content organically, it feels like magic.
